What Research is Performed?
Many studies have been carried out at the MEU since it was founded.
Previous research studies have assessed new therapies for the treatment
of asthma and COPD which have since become available on prescription.
Not all studies involve new treatments. Some assess different combinations
of existing therapies, ozone-friendly replacement inhalers or new
inhaler devices. We also perform studies which simply involve donating
small amounts of blood on an intermittent basis, or assesing new
scientific methods or clinical devices/machines.
Are the Studies Safe?
All medicines have undergone rigorous testing before being administered.
The safety of volunteers is our primary concern.
All studies are submitted to an Independent Ethics Committee for
approval. The Ethics Committee are responsible for ensuring that
your safety has been thoroughly considered and that all study information
provided to volunteers is accurate, fair, understandable and that
your rights are being maintained.
All studies have to be conducted under internationally agreed guidelines
enforced by the U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the UK
Medicines Health Products Care Regulatory Agency (MHRA) Studies
are also carried out in accordance with GCP (Good Clinical Practice)
guidelines. These are internationally recognised standards which
must be adhered to when carrying out clinical trials.
Before participating in any study, with your consent your GP would
be contacted and requested to complete a medical questionnaire.
They would also be provided with information about any studies in
which you wish to participate .
