Medicines Evaluation Unit - Frequently Asked Questions.

Who can participate in our research studies?
Adults (male & female) aged 18 to 80 who have a diagnosis of Asthma or COPD (e.g. Bronchitis, Emphysema), We are also currently looking for healthy males aged between 18 & 45.

What would participating involve?
Our recruitment team is available on our freephone number 0800 655 6553 to answer any questions you may have about clinical trials. If you would like to learn more about a study
we will complete a short questionnaire with you over the phone to take some details about you and your medical condition.  Your details will be held on our confidential database. When a suitable study becomes available we send you an information pack. Volunteers are not obliged to take part in a study and you may withdraw from a trial at any point should you so wish.
 

Do I need to inform my GP if I take part?
As part of your consent to join a study, we ask your permission to contact your GP. He will confirm your current medical status and your prescribed medication. 

How long does each study last?
Each study is different and can range in length between a few weeks up to a period of a few months.  The attendance required for each study varies from brief visits, half or whole days or occasionally overnight stays.
 

Volunteer Facilities & Amenities
During your visit to the MEU, you will often have time to relax and meet fellow volunteers in our friendly surroundings.  Amenities at the unit include; a comfortable lounge, TV and DVD player, Free internet access, a pool table,  a fully stocked kitchen and secure complimentary parking. 

Will I be rewarded  for taking part?
You time is precious.  We pay expenses and compensate you for your time with us.  The amount varies according to the duration of the study, the number of visits and the length of each visit you make.  When we invite you to join a study we will inform you of the payments specific to that trial.

Are Clinical Trials Safe?
Your safety is our priority, therefore all studies are submitted to an independent Ethics Committee for approval before they can commence. Each trial is conducted in accordance with UK laws and we adhere to Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines. These are the international safety standards by which clinical research units operate. The MEU is also regulated and inspected by the MHRA.
